Pet Safety During New Year’s Celebration

December 27, 2021
Holiday mishaps with your dog or cat can be stressful and scary. Read and learn a few tips below on pet safety during New Year’s celebration.

Written by: Emma Olson, CCS at VSH North County

Keep your pets busy during the day

If you keep your pets active during the day on New Years Eve (a nice long walk or game of fetch), this may help them to relax and rest when it comes time for the celebration. A tired pet is a happy pet! If you’re hosting, especially if you have an anxious pet, consider putting them in a quiet room away from the party. Even confident dogs and cats can get spooked or anxious among crowds and would prefer a quiet space.

Keep your pets inside during the celebration

If celebrating outside, leave your pets inside. You can easily become distracted and take your eyes off them. When bringing your pet outside during the evening, have them secured tight on a leash. Make sure your pet’s microchip & vaccination tags are up-to-date.

Be aware of fireworks throughout the night! Use positive white noises when fireworks and other loud noises can be heard. If you’re heading out for the night, provide puzzle toys and white noise for your pet.

Keep an eye on alcohol and other substances

According to Pet Poison Hotline, alcohol is toxic to dogs & cats. Be aware of where you place your beverages and if they’re in reach of your pets. When serving food, do not feed your dogs fatty foods as they can cause GI upset or pancreatitis.

If it’s just you and your pet for the night, consider a quieter place to stay

Find a calmer part of town with a pet-friendly hotel, or maybe stay with family members/friends who you know your pet is comfortable with.

Don’t forget to have fun!

With all of these tips in mind, make sure to have fun! Take photos together all cuddled up. Have a baking party with pet-friendly recipes. Watch a movie marathon while you wait for the ball drop together, and Happy New Year!
