Pet Microchips: How to Check the Chip

August 3, 2022

Did you know that August 15th is National Check the Chip Day? If you have your pet microchipped, you may not think about continuously checking it’s information and keeping it updated, which is why this day was created to remind you all to check the chip! Keeping your pet’s microchip information correct could be the very thing that brings them back home if they ever become lost, which is why checking the chip is so important.

What Do I Need To Check on the Chip?
  • The microchip number
  • The microchip brand

Some of the most common microchip companies are listed here.

Once you have these two things, you’ll be able to contact the registry of your microchip company, and they’ll help you update your information. If you have the number but are unsure of the brand/registry, you can use AAHA’s universal pet microchip lookup tool to find it. Not sure how to find your pet’s microchip number and brand? There are a few ways you can find this information:

How Can I Check the Chip?

The first step in checking the chip is to call your vet! They may have your pet’s microchip information in their records, and can help point you in the right direction. If they do not have this information, the next step is to get them scanned, which you can do at:

  • Vet’s Office
  • Animal Shelter
  • Animal Control
Pet Not Microchipped?

Having your pet microchipped is important for your pet’s overall safety, and your own peace of mind. Microchipping only takes a few minutes and your pet will be registered immediately. To get your pet microchipped, make an appointment with your vet, it may be the one thing that brings your pet home to you!
